Insights 14: We don't do it better - Trust your People

Edition 13: 18 August 2021

Thoughtful quotations:

“Real power comes from empowering others” Denis Waitley

“Leading is about enriching others, not yourself” John Maxwell

“You can get the best out of others, when you give the best of yourself” Harry Firestone

Context for reflection:

Many leaders wrestle with and fear delegation. Typical fears include:

  • something may go wrong,

  • it may come back to me anyway,

  • management may think we don’t know what we’re doing,

  • the person may show us up!

People who “make things happen” are often promoted to manage others because they are self-starters / high performers in their roles. This does not imply an ability to empower others.

The challenge is giving up our sense of “our way”, as the right or preferred way. It is about realising that legitimate and credible power is built on growing others.

If I want to lead empowering others is a given. How well we do this, defines us as leaders, in many senses. Empowering will take more time at the outset, as guidance is a prerequisite. The extent of guidance relates to level of task complexity.

Delegation is an act of trust. It shows belief in the person’s capabilities. Often a wonderful experience for the person. It will also grow your power and influence. Win-win!!

If your team is not busier than you, find something to delegate! You need time to think, lead and facilitate team planning.

A few question to contemplate:

  • Is your team busier than you?

  • What happens if you are not around? Who can pick up key elements of what you do?

  • What exposure / development can you give to your team and how will you guide their growth?

Drafted in all humility as I continue my journey of discovery. It is indeed challenging, with so much to remember and learn.
