Insights 2: The power of choice

Thoughtful quotations: Our attitude is our choice

“The greatest power a person has is the power to choose” J Martin Kohe

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way” Victor Frankl

Context for reflection:

Victor Frankl, celebrated neurologist, psychiatrist and philosopher, wrote these words from his learnings as a holocaust survivor. He arrived at this thought in Auschwitz by observing the behaviour of fellow prisoners of war. In this “hell on earth” he wrote: “amongst all those who made it through, they had something significant to do in their lives”. Whilst the reasons varied considerably from completing world changing scientific discoveries others were simply a determination to care for loved ones. Irrespective, these survivors believed this was their absolute responsibility. They were determined to live toward that vision.

Amidst the turmoil of COVID-19, which continues its devastating impact on our world, many of our freedoms have been curtailed, leading to severe of emotional traumas for each one of us. Whilst some people have managed well and found opportunities, others have faced the toughest of personal traumas, including loss of loved ones, mental abuse, insecurity (loss of jobs / income), hurt, pain, anger, denial, blame to name a few. Tough circumstances may well come our way.

A few questions to ponder:

  • Where are you right now?

  • What is your attitude? What are you choosing?

  • What is your powerful motivator?

  • How is your choice influencing your behaviour / communication? How are you impacting others?

  • How will the learnings of 2020 help you lead in 2021?

Drafted in all humility as I continue my journey of discovery. It is indeed challenging, with so much to remember and learn.
